Ukraine's President goes on sick leave with 'flu'

Protesters in Kiev defiantly rejected an amnesty offer passed by the Ukrainian parliament that promised to free imprisoned activists if they stood down and left occupied buildings.

Six people have been killed in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities in protests that erupted more than two months ago after President Viktor Yanukovich walked away from a treaty with the European Union under pressure from Russia.

Protesters have occupied key buildings in various cities, set up encampments in squares and erected barricades in streets. Under the conditions of the amnesty these would have to be dismantled and buildings vacated. It allows for peaceful protests, though.
However, protesters aren't in the mood to stand down.
‘These laws are a lie and people don't trust them,’ Oleh, a protester from Kiev, told Channel 4 News.
He added: ‘People were defending their constitutional rights and we actually don't understand what we need an amnesty.’ 

Archbishops criticise Nigerian and Ugandan anti-gay laws

 The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have written to the presidents of Nigeria and Uganda, after being asked about laws there penalising gay people.

The letter said homosexual people were loved and valued by God and should not be victimised or diminished.

Nigeria and Uganda have both passed legislation targeting people with same-sex attraction.

The letter is also addressed to all primates (heads of national Churches) in the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Archbishops Justin Welby of Canterbury and John Sentamu of York said the letter was a result of "questions about the Church of England's attitude to new legislation in several countries that penalises people with same-sex attraction."...

In Nigeria this month, President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a bill which bans same-sex marriages, gay groups and shows of same-sex public affection.

In Uganda, a bill allowing for greater punishments for Gays, and those who fail to turn them in to police, has been passed by parliament, but blocked - for now - by President Museveni.

The laws have been heavily criticised by gay and human rights groups.

Akure Airport Chose As Perishable Cargo Terminal

The Federal Government, through the aviation Minister, Mrs Stella Oduah, has disclosed that, the Akure Airport has been designated as a perishable cargo terminal.

Making this known on Monday, during

her visit to the airport under construction, in company of state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, Oduah noted that the perishable terminal would be a gateway to farmers and industrialists, stressing that it would also be a huge platform for employment generation and of a great economical advantage to the state..

Doves Released by Pope Francis Brutally Attacked Immediately by Crows, Seagulls | Birds

A crow and a seagull attacked two white doves released by children standing next to Pope Francis on Sunday at St. Peter's Square. The birds of prey swooped down after the "peace" doves flew from the open window in the Apostolic Palace.

One dove broke free from the gull, after losing a few feathers in the fray. A crow pecked the other before both doves escaped and flew away. Their ultimate fate is unknown.

 The National Automotive Council (NAC) says Nigerians would soon be able to purchase brand new made in Nigeria cars for as low as N1.2 million. This is even as there are no standard foundry and forge companies with capacity to manufacture engine blocks and the Ajaokuta Steel Company is still in comatose. But NAC said it was working on the new National Automotive Industry Development Plan.

In addition, the agency said government would collaborate with auto manufacturers, franchise holders, reputable motor dealers and selected banks to put in place an all-inclusive domestic dealership network through which a user-friendly vehicle purchase scheme could be funded by the National Automotive Council.

“Under market development, the NAIDP anticipated that higher-end expensive models will still be imported into the country in the initial stage, but the new strategy is to encourage local auto manufacturers to focus primarily on lower-end less expensive models with price range of between N1.2m and N1.5m; which is affordable to the middle class, coupled with other finance options.”..

Lawyers Protest In Rivers Over Non-Appointment Of Substantive CJ

The series of protests rocking Rivers State continued on Thursday when scores of lawyers took to the streets of Port Harcourt, the state capital, to stage a demonstration over the failure of Governor Rotimi Amaechi to appoint a substantive Chief Judge for the state.

The lawyers, who converged on the main gate of the State High Court under the auspices of the Forum of Concerned Lawyers of The Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch, said the absence of a chief judge in the state was hindering the dispense of justice in Rivers.

The lawyers, who expressed concern over the continued absence of a substantive chief judge in the state, gathered at the State High Court premises around 7.20am, chanting solidarity songs against the state government.

My successor’s main challenge’ll be CBN’s independence, says Sanusi

 The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has said the major challenge his successor will face is that of maintaining the independence of the apex bank, warning that any attempt to muscle the bank will be inimical to the economy.

Sanusi who spoke in an interview with Bloomberg TV Africa at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said it is important that the CBN be allowed to make comments openly at all times about the economy without fear or favour.

He said: “It’s extremely important from the fiscal side, it’s extremely important from the governance side, that the governor of the central bank is able to speak independently of political authority and raise an alarm and concerns and give constructive criticism and advice.

“If anyone tampered with it, the markets would punish the economy. It’s a very strong institution that needs a strong leader and I think one of the things we’ve achieved over the last four or five years is to show that we can have an independent central bank in Africa.”

Girl, 14, stabs sister 40 times because she felt unappreciated

According to CNN

An 11-year-old Illinois girl was stabbed 40 times by her 14-year-old sister, police say, and the reason why has many in the small Chicago-area community of Mundelein reeling in disbelief.

Police found the 11-year-old girl unconscious and in need of medical attention in an upstairs bedroom of the dwelling Tuesday morning. She later died.

Because the sister, who called police, initially told officers an intruder was to blame for the attack, authorities briefly placed three schools on lockdown.

The truth, when it emerged, was even more shocking.

The 14-year-old, authorities say, repeatedly and fatally stabbed the victim -- her half sister -- with a kitchen knife because the teen thought she was ungrateful.

"This incident is a heartbreaking tragedy that defies understanding," said Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz. "I am asking the Chicagoland area, please pray for us. Pray, first of all, for the family that has been devastated by this."

Union Bank building in U.T.C Area 10 in Abuja was gutted by fire this evening, The last floor of the 3-storey building was completely razed and the popular Abuja furniture store, Hadar Situare was also affected in the fire. Millions of Naira worth of furniture was destroyed.

The fire was eventually put out by the combined team work of the Airforce fire fighters & the Federal Fire Fighters. It took seventeen trucks of water to put the fire out. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

Controversy sells and true, controversial singer/rapper Maheeda hangs on to it for dear life as she releases her highly anticipated ‘Naija bad girl’ video which had rained criticisms on her after she released behind-the-scene raunchy pictures of the video shoot.True to the pictures earlier circulated Maheeda was completely nude in some scenes in the video. But then, she was gracious to have a clean cut version put out for those who just can’t stand it.

Nudity, however may not be the only issue she has to contend with in this work. Already those who have watched the video are alleging she is a lame rapper. True, her delivery was weak, with shabby lyrics that could literally be counted.

Aside her body, only the hook in the chorus made some kind of a lasting impression.

After an interaction with some of them, it was gathered that, rather than engaging in demeaning jobs like prostitution, these ladies, who are graduates of different  tertiary institutions, said they applied as traffic controllers and flag girls on the expressway with the firm handling the reconstruction work..

Vanguard gathered that the girls, up to 10 in number, graduated from different tertiary institutions.

11 hours on the road daily
They spend up to 11 hours on the road everyday, with an hour break while they are paid per hour.
Vanguard gathered that they earn between N30,000 and N40,000 monthly.
It was an herculean task getting to talk with the ladies for two reasons. One, they will not want to lose precious work-time, and they will not want to incur the wrath of their employers by speaking to the press.

However, authoritative sources told Vanguard that the ladies, without exception, were there for mere survival.

‘The Federal Government Ordered Rivers State Police To Kill Me’ – Senator Abe Reveals

 Senator Magnus Abe who was reportedly shot by the Rivers state police and several others wounded at the venue of a rally has accused the Federal Government of plotting to kill him.

In a seven-page letter to his colleagues in the Senate, Abe pointedly accused unnamed officials of the Nigerian federal government of having instructed the Rivers State Police Command to eliminate him, insisting that the police abused its powers.

“It was clear to me that using the police to stop a gathering that had been extensively advertised and was to be aired on live television would be an unfair blow to Rivers people and a clear abuse of police power,” Mr. Abe said.

Recounting what happened on the day of  the rally, Abe said, at about 9.30 a.m, he got a report that the police had invaded and destroyed everything at the rally venue and were firing teargas indiscriminately. When he arrived at the gate of CAS, he saw the Nigerian Police in full battle formation with armoured personnel carriers and scores of mobile policemen armed to the teeth, listing some of the police officers he met at the venue to include, Mike Uche Chukwuma, one Marcus, ASP Pere, Supol Sani and DPO Esther Effiong, among others...

  The couple were thrown onto the roof of Claire's Ford Fiesta before falling to the road 40 yards from where they were struck.
  Mr O'Neill, 38, suffered a broken neck fractured vertebrae in his neck and a broken collar bone, while 33-year-old Miss Kimble sustained multiple cuts to her head and face and a broken collar bone.

Al-Qaeda Group Claims Attack On Beirut Suburb

An al-Qaeda-linked group has said it carried out a suicide car-bomb attack killing at least four people in a Beirut suburb known to be a Hezbollah stronghold.

Tuesday’s attack at 11.10am local time in Shia-dominated Haret Hreik ignited a library close to other government and residential buildings.

A group calling itself Jabhat al-Nusra in Lebanon, believed to be a branch of Syria’s al-Qaeda faction, said it carried out the attack.

It said on Twitter: “With the help of God almighty we have responded to the massacres carried out by the party of Iran [Hezbollah]… with a martyrdom operation in their backyard in the southern [Beirut] suburbs.”

It was the second attack in less than a month on the suburb.

Phyno Denies Being The Father Of Rita Edmond's Child

An anonymous press release to media houses had Phyno up in arms, with reports that he had impregnated short-term love interest, Rita Edmond.

Phyno denies ever being romantically involved with the songstress.

The report tells of their alleged romance, that Rita is expecting a child, and that Rita was due for an abortion of which Phyno disapproved.

 AKURE — DETECTIVES in Ondo State have arrested  a quark nurse over the death of an 18-year-old girl, Omolayo Afolabi, who she helped to terminate a two-month pregnancy in Iju/Itaogbolu area of the state.

Also arrested by the police is Joseph Endurance, the deceased lover said to have been responsible for her pregnancy.

The quack nurse, Favour Adebiyi, was reportedly approached by the deceased to help her abort the pregnancy.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased, who was introduced to the quack nurse by one of her friends, informed her to help them terminate the pregnancy since her boy friend was too young to father a child.

The nurse was said to have given her some drugs to use which, according to information, led to her untimely death.

It was gathered that the drugs taken at night by the deceased later led to some complications.

Instead of seeking medical help, the deceased, according to report, thought she could still salvage the situation until the pain became unbearable and resulted in her death some 24 hours after she administered the drugs.

Mba, Scores First Goal For Bastia.

2013 African Cup of Nations revelation, Sunday Mba, opened his goal-scoring account for Ligue 2 side CA Bastia on Tuesday night in the Coupe de France.

Mba, who joined Bastia early this year from Warri Wolves, helped the club level scores at 2-2 against Niort with just a minute to regulation time and force the game into extra-time at the Stade Armand Cesari.

With no goal in extra-time, Bastia won the ensuing penalty shootout 5-4 to advance into the next round of the championship.

Rare Blue Diamond found in South Africa's Cullinan mine

A rare blue diamond has been discovered in a mine in South Africa.

The 29.6-carat stone was recovered by Petra Diamonds at its Cullinan mine, about 40km (25 miles) north-east of Pretoria.

"This stone is one of the most exceptional stones recovered at Cullinan during Petra's operation of the mine," the company said.

Petra unearthed a 25.5 carat blue diamond which sold for $16.9m (£10.3m) in 2013.

 Three protesters have died in clashes with police in the Ukraine today as a shocking video emerged of a man having his hand blown off in the capital by a stun grenade.

The gruesome clip appears to be filmed during a protest. It shows the grenade going off before protesters attending to an injured man whose hand is ripped to shreds while blood spurts from his wrist.

Meanwhile, Oleh Musiy, coordinator of the medical corps for the anti-government protesters, said one activist died this morning in the hospital after falling from a high altitude at the site of the clashes. ..

Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has openly confessed her love for the human bum, which is popularly referred to as ‘Ukwu’ by the original Port-Harcourt boy Timaya and Kukere master, Iyanya.

The Nigeria’s Got Talent judge made this declaration at the fourth semi-final episode of the show on Sunday, January 18 2014 after the performance of one groups, D’Elevators.

Ending their performance with the popular song from Timaya known as ‘Ukwu’, the Elevators had a mix of Western and Nigerian songs, as well as their very contagious energy working for them as that got the judges showering praises on them.

“I love Ukwu,” said an excited Kate. “The energy was on point, the costume was perfect, well done guys,” she added.
